Topic: How to deal with emotions for adults with ADHD

Triggers/Warning Signs of emotional overload:


  • Frustrated
  • Jittery
  • Edgy
  • High background noise levels
  • Too much stimulation
  • Boring
  • Not Open Up
  • Patience
  • Wound Up
  • Warm
  • Voice rises/shakes
  • Authority
  • Intense people
  • Territorial

Possible ways to deal with high emotional situations/ Emotional control:


  • Respect Space
  • Write down/ Journal and reflect
  • Walk / Run/ Exercise
  • Get someone to reflect/ Monitor and Paraphrase you
  • Breathing exercises (Andrew Wiel has a good tape on this)
  • Leaving situation
  • Maintain Health
  • Self Care/ Eat/ Sleep well
  • Yoga / Martial Arts
  • Reduce booze consumption
  • Communicate feelings
  • Defer situation
  • Humour
  • Shift Focus
  • Sex
  • Music – Play/Listen to
  • Progressive Relaxation
  • Arts, Painting, Pottery (throw a few pots)
  • Chores
  • Reading
  • Pets
  • Candles/Aroma therapy
  • Own space to relax in
